OFFERING YOUR BUCK TO

LITTLE BEANS RATTERY TASMANIA

This form will guide you through an assessment on your male rat's suitability to breed into our lines or re-integrate some of our own genetics back in.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION BEFORE YOU START

  1. Submitting this form does not guarantee that your rat will be chosen for our programs and depending on the health or temperament, can be refused at any time prior to pairing.

  2. All questions must be answered accurately and without omission.

  3. Breeding is NOT profitable. This is not a cash exchange opportunity.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR:

Our search for bucks (or any rat for that matter) starts with health and temperament. Everything else comes later.

The selected rat should:

  • Follow natural curiosity without startling too easily

  • Have a good, clear background (e.g. which breeder they came from)

  • Tolerate handling well

  • Be in great health and weight

  • Have good fur, tail, ear, nose and eye condition

  • Have clear, airy breathing

  • Fit any coat/colour criteria needed

  • Be local to or deliverable to the Launceston Area

  • Be from Little Beans Rattery (Not required but desirable)

The selected rat should NOT:

  • Be over/under weight

  • Bite through the bars

  • Have lived solo

  • Have aggression towards any rat or human (including any and all past incidents)

  • Have any active illness/disease/parasite/recent surgery or injury

  • Be on any medications including "non-active" desexing implants

  • Be under 6 months old

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Typically, the doe will go into heat every 3 days and therefore, we would require the buck for no more than 2 weeks. If the act is witnessed, he could return home earlier!

I breed my rats in large, meshed tubs. Inside these tubs are chews, nesting materials and a forage feeder and a nesting box. During the pairing, I interact with them and observe them as closely as possible.

When I am certain the doe is pregnant, the male is removed and can return home.

WHAT DO I GET FOR OFFERING MY BUCK?

During the Buck's stay with us, they will not be introduced to any other males for any reason. Rat company will be provided by the female/s. I will also maintain contact throughout. The buck will enjoy occasional safe treats, a well rounded lab-block diet and enrichment items such as foragers and chews as well as twice daily checks.

In return for your Buck's service, you will get first pick of the males in the litter, free of charge.

There is no limit on how many you can choose, however you will need to require proof of an adequate enclosure for the group's size.

If you are not interested in more rats, that is fine! We would be grateful for the genetic donation!
